Can't say enough about the Devonshire & the staff. My Mother has been a resident for 7 years. She lived in the independent wing and then assisted. The team have created a warm, caring & fun community for it's seniors. Many thanks!
Beat the Heat and Sun Back
Summer is here! The sun is out and the temperatures are rising quickly. Though summer is the best time for outdoor activities, it is important to protect yourself from the sun during the heat of summer. Here are some ways to beat the heat and sun during the summer months.
- Be sure to always wear sunscreen, even on cloudy or overcast days. Your skin is very delicate and it is important to protect it as much as possible, even if you are only outdoors for a short period of time. Limit your time outdoors to reduce the risk of dehydration and heat stroke. It is important to remain hydrated while being outside. Be sure to drink plenty of water. Know the signs of heat stroke and stay in the shade when possible.
- Loose, protective clothing when outside is recommended. Thinner fabrics like cotton will help to keep you cool while also protecting your skin from sunburn. Try to avoid wearing darker colors because they attract the sunlight. A hat is a useful accessory to wear while outdoors to block the sun from your eyes and prevent sunburn on your scalp and face.
- Going for walks during the morning hours is a great way to be outside and still beat the heat. The summer mornings tend to be cooler than the blistering afternoons and are the perfect time to get some fresh air and exercise as the hottest part of the day is a few hours away. A short walk is a great way to relax and is a peaceful way to work on mental health.
- There are many fun ways to beat the heat while staying indoors. It is easy to beat the heat by staying in the air conditioning. Games like cards or checkers are great summer activities. These can be played inside, away from the heat and bright sun. Games that require a partner are fun ways to catch up with friends or meet someone new. Sewing, knitting, and quilting are more fun activities to pass the time while staying indoors and creating something beautiful. You can knit a scarf for yourself for make a quilt for a family member. If you prefer to relax, you can always pick up a book or watch a movie
It is important to follow precautions during the summer to protect yourself from the sun and heat. Following these precautions will help us prevent sunburn, dehydration and more. Enjoy your summer!
The staff at The Devonshire treats the residents as they are their own family. That's what I would want for my family. I think all the work they do is overlooked. Well, I guess they make it look so easy.
Great facility compassionate and caring.
